As always this review is spoiler FreeSaturday I went out to see Maleficent with my Family, and although I had my doubts about it It ended up pleasantly surprising me. I've always been a fan of the Sleeping Beauty story, mostly stemming out of a love for the song "once upon a dream" and since seeing the original sleeping beauty while procrastinating for finals a while back it wasn't as good as my young mind has remembered it to be. It was my first real interaction with "true love". Even little Dana didn't believe that Cinderella or Snow white actually loved their Prince Charmings after meeting them for 15 minutes, and although Aurora and Philips love may seem superficial at least they met and interacted and Philip had a name. Proof of Philip and Auroras loveAnd Obvi their love is true because Phillip fights his way through the thorn wall and stands off with Maleficent in dragon form before kissing his darling Aurora awake. So much more then Cinderellas prince identifying her via shoe size. Non the less I was a bit weary of seeing the whole thing from maleficent point of view. Maleficent is EVIL. She cursed Aurora and tried to kill Philip all because she didn't get invited to a party. I mean I'm a bit dramatic ill admit but i would never try to kill anyone over not being invited to a christening. But it was playing at a $5 theater near me and my dad offered to take me and I was feeling like popcorn and Maleficent was one of the few movies I hadn't seen yet that looked remotely interesting so why not. For those of you who haven't seen it yet here is the stunning trailer Well I'm so glad I went. It was by far my favorite "person" disney movie so far. There have been a lot of disney remake flunks like Tim burton's Alice In Wonderland (Ehh) and Little Red Riding hood with Amanda Sefred (Mehhh) And dont even get me started on the snow white flunks of a few years ago: Mirror Mirror, and Snow White and the Huntsman. As opposed to those moves maleficent was actually really really good. For many reasons, but im going to start with... The CastAngelina Jolie (Maleficent) takes the cake with this role. I seriously think it was made for her. I cant really think of anything she's been in since Salt (2010) but shes made her come back as a majorly sexy Maleficent seriously look at the improvement. It's pretty much the best before and after ever. Her acting was spectacular she made me feel all it is to be Maleficent, she made me hate her and love her and understand her and hate other characters all at the same time. Ugh, so good. I want to see it again. Most of the lines were the same as the original movie (with elaboration of course) but the scene where she curses Aurora I was on the edge of my seat. It was Just amazing. Elle Fanning (Aurora) was a good Choice as well. Although she has a smaller role in the film she is just as lovely and charming as the original aurora, although she looks a lot younger and more innocent. Which I actually think is better. Aurora is only 16 when she pricks her finger but the cartoon of Aurora seems much older and could easily pass as 18 or 20. Elle was a good choice, and Aurora was a lovable character. Although she never sang, which was a disappointment. :( Finally Sam Riley plays Diaval, the raven who Maleficent saves from a trap and turns into a man. Diaval in returns promises his servitude for saving his live and spends the rest of the film being turned from a raven into a man (and some other creatures). He's definitely my favorite character and turning the raven into a person was creative genius. He is the lovable counter part to the cold and withdrawn maleficent. The CGI was great because Diaval is a raven for a lot of the movie but they were still able to protray expressions and body language in Diaval's animal form. And Dival is definetly more sexy then in the first version of the film anyway lets move on to the second part of the film, The Story line (no spoilers)The story line was believable, and a great fresh twist. The world is separated into to lands, the Humans and the other creatures (fairies, pixies, nymphs etc) Maleficent starts the movie as an innocent Fairy orphan, she's very powerful and very innocent, but she trusts the wrong person and is betrayed by someone else's greed. I have seen many blog posts comparing the stealing of her wings as a rape, and it honestly seemed like that. The thing that she loved most was riped from her and left watchers mourning for her loss as well. Her curse seems justified at the time, and I even felt myself siding with maleficent (YOU GO GIRL, GET THOSE BASTARDS BACK FOR WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU) but as the story progresses and Maleficent watches Aurora grow up she begins to regret her curse which was made while she was angry and depressed. What I really liked is that this story is not about "true love" love in the way the the original was about Aurora and Philips love. Although Philip is in the story line, Maleficent is about learning to love after something is taken away from you, forgiving those who have hurt you, and continuing on after such a huge loss. Star Rating: 5/5In my opinion, Maleficent was much better then the original Sleeping Beauty. Although some of that goes directly to Diaval for being so awesome, the story is in general amazing. With a happy ever after that is more then just, the princess found her prince. This an amazing story and I urge everyone to go out and see it. Its much different then I expected, and I walked out of the theater so satisfied. I will definitely see it again when it comes out on DVD. And as an added tid bit here is Once Upon a Dream sung buy the wonderful Lana Del Ray: and a gallery of some fabulous maleficent scenes: Have you seen it? What are your thoughts? Comment below!XOXO
