1. Talk to your friends and family members who have joined a sorority. The best thing to do is talk to someone who rushed at the college that you will be attending. Reach out to people from your high school who graduated before you and attend the same college. Each school has a unique rush process which can really only be described by someone who has gone through it. If your not sure whether or not Greek life is for you talk to college graduates and ask for their experiences. 2. Get recommendations. some houses don't pay attention to it, in some houses its the most important thing. look up what sorority are at the school your attending and ask around for people to write your recs. Your parents, your parents friends, your family members, people you work with, your friends parents/family. You never know! If you can get into contact with a current member of a sorority at your school and express your interest in rushing, they can recommend you within their own sorority as well. Also remember, having "legacy" status does not mean that your are guaranteed to get asked back. so be careful. You can find the links to all the panhelenic sororities here and the recommendations can be found on their websites 3. Clean up your social media pages. this is something I wish I did, and although it doesn't matter that much. Don't believe for one second that you wont be thoroughly Facebook stalked. Take off any embarrassing or incriminating pictures, or posts that can be interpreted in the wrong way. Or make them private. Instead post about things that make you unique in the weeks before rush. The houses will be looking for someone who is interesting and fits in with them. despite the stereotypes sorority houses are very diverse full of women who are interested in all sorts of things. Finally Make your profile picture a clear picture of you alone. After I joined a house several of my new sisters already knew my name purely because of my Facebook profile. 4. Start planning your outfits You don't have to know exactly what your going to wear, but you don't want to go to school and realize that you have no dress shoes or appropriate dresses or matching shoes or whatever. I wouldn't say you have to buy anything expensive, but make sure your bringing a few nice sundresses and sandals. However whatever sorority you join there is a 90% chance that you will need both a plain Little black dress and a little white dress. so if your going to buy anything I'd get those. 5. Research the sororities at your school Go to the Panhellenic website at for your school and find out what houses are there. Each sorority will probably have there own personal website where you can familiarize yourself with the type of women who are part of that organization, along with philanthropy, pictures of the house, etc. This will help you familiarize yourself with the houses and knowing information about an organization will definitely impress the women your talking to during recruitment. 6. Research the rush process at your school when is it? Is there anything in specific you need to bring or have? what are GPA requirements, and how long does the rush process take? Some schools rush in the summer, Fall, or spring. Some schools rush multiple times a year. Some schools have formal recruitment and some schools have more informal recruitment. Researching will help make sure you don't miss deadlines and are prepared for rush. 7. Talk to your parents about the financial aspects of rush Joining a sorority is a financial responsibility, costing anywhere from $500 to $4,000 a semester. There is no way to know how much a sorority is going to be until you go through the rush process, but be sure you talk to your parents and figure out who is going to pay for what and make sure your on the same page. 8. Practice small talk You only get 3-10 minutes to talk to each girl you meet, try to stay out of the "whats your major, what dorm are you in" talk. It makes it easy for you to blend in with all the other girls that are rushing. Think up interesting topics and things that make you unique to talk about when your having your rush interview. And remember to always smile. 9. Look at a map and/or the buss routes Recruitment requires some major walking during your invites, and depending on your campus size, you may be running to get to your next house within the 15 min until the next house. Knowing your way around campus makes things so much easier. This is something to look into if your going to school a few weeks early for rush, or rushing right after the school year starts. 10. Sign Up! what are you waiting for? Sign up! Even if you decide later that Greek life really isn't for you, I think that everyone should go through the rush process just for the experience.
